If LA were mapped to DC, DC would stretch from Damascus to Woodbridge. Look at the part of LA that corresponds to DC and what rates do you have?

By that rationale Baltimore is super safe because there’s no one committing murders near the horse farms 10 miles north of Towson. You are really reaching here 😆

Los Angeles’ murder rate is about half of DC’s and going down.

DC’s has a murder rate that’s more than 5x higher than LA this year. 267 murders in LA so far; 230 in DC, and LA has 3 million more people.

Most of the crime occurs in areas with more commercial real estate.

What are you talking about? Mexico City’s murder rate is about a third of DC’s and is closer to Salt Lake City or Charlotte.

I walk from Tenleytown to Georgetown daily, different times of day.

Mornings - the usual street people milling around. Had one man start yelling at me one morning last week and I wished I had brought something for defense. I don't make that mistake anymore.

Afternoons - the kids getting out of the high school can be problematic. See: fight at Wawa, or just go into Wawa and look how disgusting and trashed it is all the time. Passed by the alley off River Rd where it meets Wisconsin between the church and the parking garage for Container Store, a handful of high school kids smoking pot there yesterday.

Evenings - Passing the Psych place is a problem. Consistently police presence and people sitting outside who are not in a good headspace. It is usually worth crossing the street because of it.

I don't fear car jackings though or street robberies and I've been walking this route for years.

It does not feel "more" dangerous to me. I am aware that there are crimes happening, and I would like that to stop. But I do not feel unsafe. I personally experienced more crime 25 years ago while living in other parts of the city. I have been aware of crime in this area for 20 years now, and have never liked it, particularly when it happened to friends and kids (though those incidents were over 5 years ago). Nonetheless, I (and the people who were victims) feel comfortable shopping, going to school, and taking the Metro in the area, but are as cautious as we have ever been, as one should be in a major metropolitan area. I would like the crime to stop.

I think youth crime is out of control in the City generally, and the City needs to do something to help these kids and prevent them from continuing on this destructive path. I also think the City should compensate victims. That would add an economic incentive to stopping crime.
