There is a GPA requirement of 3.5. It’s tough to get in. I know kids who were not accepted.

DD had a 3.3 and is in the freshman class. 2.5 was the cutoff for consideration last year. Admissions is more holistic. That said, I had a really good feeling during the interview that she was deemed a good fit.

Wow, that is a really low cut off.

commute, sports, friends going, more course offerings, want a larger school, kid wants to go to JR...

+1

Some kids don’t want to do a long commute, wants sports practice and teams actually play at their school, have a full campus, more course offerings, etc. Walls does not have good communication or organization in terms of admin. Banneker is very old school and can be too over the top in terms of admin.

I know kids who have chosen each of these three schools (Walls, Banneker, JR) over the others. If you’re lucky enough to have the choice, it’s very much a question of which school is right for you.

3.5? I don't remember a GPA requirement when my kid applied 2 years ago. I seem to recall a suggested minimum GPA of 3.5. Or is that more of the "actual" minimum GPA like Walls 3.8 or whatever the latest actual cutoff was.

There is no requirement unless they changed it this year. They just pick the students they want😎

*the minimum suggested I recall was 3.0 not 3.5.

You have to go to the individual high schools' web sites (I know, this is crazy and seems totally antithetical to centralizing the process via myschooldc).

Here's what I've found:
Banneker: this Saturday 11/4
Walls: 11/18 and 12/13 - must register in advance, cap on number of attendees
McKinley: I can't tell if this is for this year or not, https://mckinleytech.org/m/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=417347&type=d

This is the new one for MTHS. Banneker only had this one early event + EdFest last year. So if you want to go see Banneker, better go this Saturday just in case there isn't another one.

Hi OP! Please come to Banneker’s Open House tomorrow from 9-12. It’s drop-in and you can see our building, talk to teachers, and (most importantly, I think) talk to students.

Banneker does not use PARCC scores in the admission process. It is my understanding that PARCC scores are no longer allowed to be used by the application schools. We don’t see it on a student’s application.

Banneker requires GPA, two essays, and letters of recommendation to determine whether student is eligible for an interview; on interview day, students take a test and write another essay in person, and also interview with faculty. Or at least this is what they did last year. Preview day is tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 4, so you can learn more there.
