DD is on the fringes, but has found wonderful group of friends I hope she keeps for life. They are very studious and preppy, not popular. Our family is amongst the large donors and I too am in the fringe parent group. Everyone is kind and polite to me but I don't get invited to things and I don't care either. Most of the time I'm very out of the loop because I don't do social media. I think the parents of the popular kids are also friends with each other. I'm fine with that. I don't think there are any downsides. In fact, I think my DD and her friends are probably among the teacher favorites. Their polite, smart, friendly with everyone. I've even had teachers say they wish they could clone her.

As a teacher, I have to actively remind myself not to treat the popular kids WORSE than the less popular ones, because I was not a popular kid in high school.

Some teachers, who were either cool or uncool in high school themselves, do seem to get a kick out of being buddy buddy with the popular kids

Being popular is overrated. There is sooo much pressure on the girl to be the prettiest, nicest, best dressed, best hair, and fanciest car, etc. There is pressure to drink, have sex, smoke pot, cape. These girls are also the meanest. It’s not a good group to be in. My kid has a nice group of very average girls who go out and have sleepovers and hang out.

+1 I was a part of that crowd and looking back I would have been happier with slightly “nerdier” friends who likely would have partied less. As long as she has a group of good buds that sounds great! The popular group isn’t all it’s cracked up to be- it can be a lot of pressure and all the other things pp mentioned
