Ps - after reading about Meryl’s marriage, I’m strongly of the opinion that people should have a temporary sabbatical from their marriage.

I think a “3-3” would be ideal: a 3 month sabbatical every 3 years. You live apart, do your own thing, travel, be around new people, maybe even agree to non-monogamy during that time period. Take some time to be alone and enjoy the silence.

It honestly sounds ideal. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, imho.

They were separated for 6 years. That’s a lot of time to be apart and “work on it.” I’ve only been married to my spouse for 5 years and that feels like so long ago!

Six years? That’s enough time to build an entirely new life apart.

There’s probably someone else and one of them wants to be in a new public relationship or get married. I’m guessing Meryl probably has a new partner, because no one would really care about her husband’s relations. They’ve been separated for six years and the media hasn’t said peep.

I can see why it happens. I've been married a long time and married young. My DH was so different from anyone I had ever known, but that gets old after a while and all the small and bigger issues just keep accumulating until you decide you're happier on your own in whatever time you have left.

She's probably exhausting to be around with her holier than thou, do as I say not as I do attitude.

I hope he enjoys himself.

I think separated is working it out in this case. Leaves room to still come together as a family, but not function as a couple all the time. Sounds sort of fabulous to be honest.

Old people divorcing makes much more sense than younger people divorcing. Think about it. They have been grating on each other's nerves for decades and the raising of children is no longer an issue.

Probably did not want to be forced to divide assets, houses, etc. so stayed married. I bet a lot of people lead separate lives and just never get around to divorcing.

Agree one of them probably has someone else now so they have to come out with it.
