Unfortunately this is so true about DC politics. Just look at Charles Allen and his failed Crime Legalization Bill from earlier this year. It was so bad that President Biden himself had to step in to save the DC Council from itself. To let even more violent felons off the hook in the face of an unprecedented crime spree was a national embarrassment of because it showed a total lack of judgment on the part of our DC council. And before any apologists say no damage was done, this failed stunt set back DC statehood by decades because it showed how our local politicians are total clowns that cannot be taken seriously.

But any chance Charles will be voted out after this national debacle? Nope!! He just gets to keep virtue signaling and dreaming up more horrible legislation with impunity.

No it didn't. That was what the republicans and fox news jammed down your throat. It raised some sentences and right sized others to what typical punishments were from judges.

The crime bill was a distraction. It really didn’t matter and wasn’t going to matter. The problem is the lack of prosecution and sentencing at all, particularly for juveniles.

And rehab for juveniles while they are (rarely) locked up so they emerge better not worse. Can the Charles Allen types explain what rehab happens in the Youth Rehabilitation Act

You have to have a pretty terrible understanding of statistics not to believe that there are thousands of people in the District who have never encountered crime. I can't comment on not going into Virginia though...

NP and there’s a wide gap between shining safe utopia and I only set foot in Dc to walk from the garage to my office building. You can go to dinner in DC and get back in your car by 7:30 to drive home. If you are worried about it being dark then only do it in the summer. You are a bit paranoid though.

Sure, I could but I just don’t feel comfortable doing it and I’m too old to force myself to do things I don’t feel comfortable with. I work near the courthouses, there is nothing nearby that I would feel comfortable walking to alone to meet DH. I guess the point is there are all these extra steps that I would need to take to feel comfortable and at that point it just isn’t worth it. It wasn’t always this way, when I moved to DC in 2000 I went out all the time, took metro home late, and my DH and I loved walking to and from various restaurants, etc., walks we would never take today. I used to walk from my office to Union Station to get some exercise and catch the train home, no chance I would do that today as people making that same walk have been assaulted by mentally ill homeless people.
