LOL

Idk if it’s illegal. I’m sending my DD to school with pepper spray. My kid is at RM and there was a robbery AT school, in the school bathroom. They have individuals enter the school who shouldn’t be there.

System-wide, MCPS has displayed its inability to keep our students (and teachers) safe in schools and on the bus - look at the history of sexual assaults on buses and in schools.

If anyone so much as tries to lay a finger on my DD, she knows to kick them in the nuts and spray. Ask questions later. If she gets in trouble for doing that, so be it.

If someone robs you, it's best to just give them what they want. Do you have any clue how many students are carrying guns and knives in schools right now? Mace will do nothing against those, and might even make a situation worse. Don't give your kid a false sense of safety.

No, when someone robs you, you should give them the beating of their life, with scars to remember you by. When you “give them what they want” they not infrequently decide they want something more. The idea that people should meekly comply with criminal demands is a patronizing fraud developed by the same armed government personnel who don’t want anyone else to be able to defend themselves. Believing that you are secure because criminals will act morally and virtuously if you cooperate — now that’s a false sense of security.

Anecdotal story here from the 90s. A military parent (some kind of special forces guy) taught kids how to fight. Like kill or be killed fight. Some guy touched his daughter inappropriately and she broke him into pieces. You could say the guy "learned his lesson" but she was expelled from MCPS and they could not get a private school to admit her. They had to move and last I heard it looked like they were on the hook for a lifetime of medical care. You don't live in a TV show and if you are going to teach your kids how to fight back then also teach them how / when to stop.

Didn’t happen.

Of course it didn’t happen. Nobody is ever on the hook for a ‘lifetime of medical care’. Such nonsense.

Of course you should teach your kid to fight back. Especially your daughters, who are statistically quite likely to be victims of sexual assault.

Do you have a kid at RM? The principal sent out an email when it occurred. Traumatic enough that she felt the need to inform parents and offer support services.

If you’re not on the RM email list and are a parent, it is a good idea to sign up for it.

I think all these incidents should be reported to law enforcement. So submit a records request the police. Give the them the school address and ask for all the details (or a summary) of incidents reported in 2023. Come back and share their response.

Why don't they just put up a 'Pepper-Spray Free Zone' sign? Problem solved!

I have kids 6 years apart and RM has been much scarier and completely out of control the last 2 years. Nothing like a mixture of lower class kids and entitled brats. The drugs aMd fights are the worst. Its not a safe nor a fun school.

All those unsupervised middle school students for 1 1/2 years during the pandemic have now hit high school. They are a mess.

Kid was having a very vocal meltdown in the hall. One teacher was trying to handle. Another teacher tried to help and ended up being pushed by the kid. Teacher wasn’t hurt.

Cool story, bro.

Don’t worry. My small DD only knows basic self-defense. She won’t break anyone into pieces.

But she can carry some pepper spray just in case someone at school or on the bus touches her inappropriately.

Have ya'll been pepper sprayed?

I've had a bear spray cannister go off by mistake while I was riding in a pickup truck in Montana. It was rough.

I started screaming for the boyfriend to stop the truck and then I opened the door and took off running.

The boyfriend had no idea what was going on.

We’re talking about sexual assault. Do you think girls should just give the assaulter what he wants?

No thanks. I have taught my girls to bite and scream and kick and do whatever they can.

I’ll let them take their chances carrying mace.

Parents like you and the ones that allow their kids to rape others are why we need far more security, metal and bag detectors. You need to move your kids to a safer school. No way I’d leave my kids there.

Parents like me? I have two daughters. Could happen, but it quite unlikely that they will rape others.

You sound unhinged.

And you are delusional if you think there is a ‘safer school’. Do you think private Catholic schools are safer? Tons of young boy victims will disagree.

I’ll keep my kids at RM and try to help them feel less defenseless. Am I unhappy about the drugs and violence in schools? Yes, very much. But there is also too much violence against women in our society as a whole, and I guess schools are no different unfortunately.

dp.. I went to a pretty rough school, way rougher than RMHS. While I would absolutely not want my kid to experience my HS, nor am I happy with all the incidents at RM, I'm not anxious about sending my kid there. I had one graduate recently. They loved their experience there. The other one also loves it there, despite all the incidents.

By and large, if your kid is not part of a rough crowd, your kid won't be impacted. That was me in my HS. I was in most of the AP and honors (real honors, not fake ones like today) classes, and almost never interacted with the rougher set. Same for my kids.

You sound like me. I'm not anxious about sending my kids there either. My kids aren't part of the rough crowd so they won't be impacted with the rough crowd shenanigans.

The issues my kids would be impacted by (mean girls and those types of UMC shenanigans) could be found at any high school that is deemed better.

pp here.. the bolded has been more harmful to my kid's mental health than the other stuff going on at RM. These were girls from "nice umc" families. Thankfully, the school is large enough that my DC could find a different and better friend group.

Cool. Tell MCPS to take the sexual predators out of our schools and maybe we can re-assess.

Sexual assault is also illegal, yet it happens. My kid will protect herself, tyvm.

And, if your child gets caught with pepper spray, you might want to have a good attorney on speed dial. Or, here's an idea, that good school you moved to isn't so good so go private or move to a school without those issues.

Correct, s/he will receive a 10 day out of school suspension. No matter the reason.

If it helps, it didn't seem to affect my kids college applications or acceptances.
