I grew up here and attended MCPS. The term was used in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. The old Woodward with neighborhoods such as Luxmanor and Farmland was considered a W school. The boundary selection will determine if Woodward will be considered a W again. If diversity is the objective, then no, it will not be a W school.

As a pp correctly pointed out, the land was donated for educational purposes by the Woodward family. The name will remain with the school.


My understanding is they are using Woodward as an opportunity to adjust all boundaries of nearby schools to help diversify many of the less diverse ones.

Woodward will certainly be a more diverse school than any of the "W" schools currently are. The question is will WJ become less diverse.

Do you mean because Woodward will pull from the poorer/less desirable areas WJ had to absorb when Woodward closed historically?

Older teachers are not necessarily better teachers. And besides, every school has a mix of younger and older teachers. It's pointless to make generalizations like this.


Again, the principals basically get to hand pick their staffs from people with long track records in the system.

Yes, unless they give it a different name that doesn't start with W.

Also, there is no such thing as "South Rockville," either you are within the boundaries of Rockville or you aren't.

It might not be technically a city, but it’s becoming a thing.
