My kid has a horseshoe kidney! It’s a non-thing. The urologist instructed us not to google it because there is all this dramatic stuff out there on the web but in the majority of cases it’s fine. She is 7 and we followed up with ultrasounds for her first few years and now we don’t do anything for it, it’s just a vaguely interesting fact.

OP, has the doctor told you any other issues have been found and/or any irregular screenings?

Horseshoe kidney usually does not cause serious health problems. You or your child may need ongoing care to manage symptoms, but you can live a full, active life with horseshoe kidney. Horseshoe kidney usually does not affect life expectancy.

People with horseshoe kidney may be at higher risk for kidney (renal) cancer. Keep an eye out for symptoms, and talk to your healthcare provider about steps you should take to stay on top of your kidney health.

Op here. So after reading all the posts and being comforted that a single kidney isn’t so bad, turns out it is not a missing kidney but a horseshoe kidney. W.t.f. Anyone with this experience? Is this better or worse or the same?

OP, I wanted to share my kidney thread too - I was similarly freaking out after my 20 week ultrasound. Went back and found my post and it’s wild to recall how awful it was at the time because it’s been such a non-issue since she’s been here! These days this baby is keeping us busy with typical preschooler drama, and is beyond smart and sweet.
