I guess the argument would be that he oversaw a period of major expansion in FCPS, and that’s what they honored him for, not his views on integration. Also, that the school has had that name for 60+ years so now it’s just associated with the community, not the person.

Oh please. Even if what you say is true, the man opposed and delayed segregation. That FAR outweighs that "good thing" you identify. Imagine being a black student going to school named after a man who didn't want you there??? It needs to go. And, as Fairfax HS and Lanier showed recently, this need not be a big production. Those were pretty seamless in getting rid of "rebels" and changing to KJMS. Do it. Let the naysayers howl until their faces turn blue. Ignore. And wait it out.

+1. No one knows anything about the person behind the school name, so there's no need to change it. No one thinks about this unless they are bored and looking for something to be offended about. No one walks into that school or drives by it and feels offended.

On the other hand, there will be plenty of cons to renaming.


This is utter stupidity. DD did a research project on him two years ago. Just because you're an idiot and don't want to learn about the namesake of your school doesn't mean the rest of the community is the same way.

If the community and school board members are happy with that that’s great. But don’t call it “CG Woodson” since that’s the name of the high school in DC. It would be confusing for sports and academic events. That’s why JEB Stuart was not renamed Marshall since there’s already a Marshall up the road.

All of these changes are an improvement to counteract the racist and segregationist intent in naming them after Confederate war figures in in 1959, 1958, and 1963 respectively.


Millions of dollars spent could have gone a long way to help kids instead of virtue signaling. No one thought about who the schools were named after--they could have removed all the references to those people. And, Mosby Woods was named after a neighborhood.


You've got your opinion and I've got mine. I don't think it's virtue signaling to admit that the names (of the neighborhood too) were chosen as a tribute to a war 100 years in the past that was fought so white people could keep black people as property and to signal support for continuing legal segregation and second class citizenship for black people. I call that righting a wrong.
