Contrary to popular belief, America’s melting pot fostered a truly diverse country—beyond race or ethnicity to include religion, free speech, rule of law, human rights, and less rigid societal norms. While we aren’t perfect, we are better than the rest when it comes to living in a diverse society.
European and Scandinavian countries simple aren’t. And it’s widely known they are struggling with even minimal immigration. They’ve literally acknowledged it.
Their awesome safety net and social benefits only work when you have a set number of people who are equipped to work and fully participate in their well-oiled machine. Long story short: not all refugees or immigrants can plug into that system…and some don’t want to. Because they aren’t used to diversity (particularly in terms of religion or societal norms…including equality and more specifically gender equality), they really struggle.
Like it or not, America already went through a racial reckoning during the civil rights era. And the constant flow of immigrants to our nation fueled noticeable diversity for generations. Simply put: most of us grew up in diverse areas and are used to it. NBD.
But even America isn’t a monolith. While the DC metro area is super diverse…and most of us think it’s weird to be someplace that is 100% white…large swaths of our country are only really seeing measurable diversity now. Ever popped into a Walmart in rural Delaware and noticed the large uptick in Latinos? Know anyone in DE…black or white…who laments the noticeable change? It’s a thing. Towns like that are just beginning their growing pains/reckoning with their new normal.
The open racism abroad is something that Americans don’t realize.

Can you read, honey? Because I posted above that Norway has had about a million immigrants in the last ten years and their total population is 5.6 million. So that’s not “four” immigrants, is it?
We can’t have nice things for our society because billionaires have everything in our society and you’re dumb enough to fight the poorest, most desperate people for the scraps when your own ancestors were those poor, desperate people not that long ago.

Not really. Very few immigrants in the early 20th century failed to learn at least spoken English. Relatively few passed their native tongue to the next generation.

Did you even look at that map? Italian and German and Polish immigrants were concentrated in the NE cities. Those areas on the map are not showing that European immigrants kept their language.

My German ancestors spoke German here in the states for 3 generations. Gave it up because of anti-German sentiment during WWI.

A lot of them are recent refugees and have no money. They’ve also brought crime, at least in Sweden.
Sweden went from one of the lowest rates of gun violence in Europe to one of the highest, and something like 90% of suspects in shootings have an immigrant background.

Refugees are treated well, educated, and assimilated into the society. If you pay any attention to Scandinavian life, they are included everywhere.
Some, for sure, but not all of them. Sweden is having problems.
There is a tension there that wasn’t there before. Something like 100 policemen were injured in riots last year, and politicians this year have started burning Qurans to make a statement. Even the PM had acknowledged that integration has failed and that crime is up.
Where Sweden goes from here I don’t know, but it does seem to indicate running the country was easier when the country was more homogeneous.

Around 1920 they passed laws that cut immigration, giving room for assimilation.
