It holds just the right amount of coffee (10 ounces), has a lid that you can sip through, doesn't tip over easily, it is insulated, and you can stick it in the microwave to reheat your coffee. It fits in the cup holder of my current vehicle and my former vehicle.

I have had about 10 of these for about 20 years. The lids eventually wear out and I don't realize it until I see that I dribbled coffee all over my shirt. The cups themselves are all fine after all these years. I am down to only two lids that still fit securely, but 20 years of daily use is a good long run.

My MIL tried to serve me coffee in a similar mug and I had to decline because I was left handed and the handle was backwards for me. So she had her potter make me a custom left-handed mug for my Christmas present that year! It’s not my favorite (I use this perfectly size daisy patterned mug from Hallmark, gifted by a dear departed friend.) but I still smile when I see it.

She would have been more badass if she’d retired early in Obama’s second term.

When my dd was 4 she made up a song for me. She’d cup my face in her little hands and sing “Mama, Mama, you’re the greatest mama in town,” as the chorus and then she’d sing all the things I did for her, like making her breakfast or brushing her hair. It was so sweet but it also cracked me up because even though she was praising me, she was too much of a realist to say I was the best mom in the world. She knew that was crazy talk. But she still thought I was pretty great.

For Mother’s Day one year, I got a mug with a picture of a trophy on one side and “Greatest Mama in Town” on the other side, written in a font that looked like a young child’s handwriting. That’s my favorite mug.

This may be what you're looking for. These hold the heat a lot longer than regular ceramic or porcelain.

Perfect thickbess too for the ceramic that doesn't make the cup too hot to handle. Perfect material too so they when you microwave a cup of coffee in it, it isnt too hot to handle. .

+1

But my favorite mug is this one (Scottish terrier):

A mug with a gorilla holding a pencil in his left hand. His hand is curled. The caption is "Leftist Gorilla". It was a gift to me, a lefty, for my 16th bday. I still have it many many years later.

I also love a coffee mug made out of Celadon we bought in Thailand. Beautiful pattern. Fantastic material.

+ 1 we have “fancier” mugs/tea cups that I like the idea of in theory, but I always end up gravitating to one of our Starbucks mugs in practice and feel off kilter if they’re all in the dishwasher and I have to use something different. They really are the perfect size/thickness.

My favorite is special for sentimental reasons

But my favorite on the go mug has to be
-ceramic
-16 oz capacity min
- stiff plastic lid (not silicone)

I don’t like the taste of coffee out of metal

Hedonistic adaptation at work but I love my ember mug so much.

I also have a small handmade mug that an ex-boyfriends ceramicist aunt made just for me. It has a nice curved lip and my hand fits the handle perfectly. When I'm sick or want to curl up with tea and a book it's the mug I reach for.

I love a set of tall 16 oz mugs. (Regular glass, not yeti, etc)

Tall because they can either hold a lot. Or because if I drink less, there’s zero chance of spilling.

The lid is necessary for insulation since most of the heat is lost through the open top.

I love my Hasami porcelain mugs. They are handmade, stackable, simple, and it’s dishwasher safe.

I have the yeti mug. I don't know where the lid is so you don't have to use it. It definitely looks and feels like camping gear though! But my coffee stays warm(er) than any other mug and I like the size.
