I'm not a dinosaur, and I generally hate the phone when the conversation could be a text or two line email, HOWEVER, some conversations are better over the phone (if in person isn't an option). It can take a back and forth email conversation and squash it, quickly.

Back to OP's question, a boss calling doesn't need notice. A random company guy who might take up 5 minutes in conversation, about a topic I need time to prep for, does need notice. Usually I get a Teams message to see if I've available for a quick chat.

I’m firmly middle aged and I’m a professional field. Don’t waste my time with a call out of the blue. My boss knows better.

I think the best approach is planning calls in advance (like 48 hours).

Do you want them to call you to tell you that they will be calling?

My boss calls me and if I don't pick up he texts me. Calls again. Texts again.
Once I had to text him back "I am literally in the bathroom". I didn't want to say I AM POOPING but next time, I will.

I call my direct reports, and my bosses call me, usually to talk through ideas, catch up, or deal with complicated problems. Sometimes i let it go to voicemail and text them "I'll call back, one second" or whatever. They do the same to me. It works fine and we don't waste each others' time.

Or, I just see they called in my call list, and call back. We don't just ignore the call.

I call my direct reports, and my bosses call me, usually to talk through ideas, catch up, or deal with complicated problems. Sometimes i let it go to voicemail and text them "I'll call back, one second" or whatever. They do the same to me. It works fine and we don't waste each others' time.

Aren't all calls without notice?

I don’t mind a call here and there, but I would mind if it’s many times per day.

I had a boss that would constantly initiate zoom calls on camera without notice, and for no real reason other than to be a micromanager. I left so fast that the job isn’t included on my resume.

My boss does this - usually just to chat, not about any specific project (he's the company owner and isn't actually involved in day to day projects). It's not my favorite but it's also fine. I tend to send people a note on teams to see if they're available for a quick call before actually calling.

OMG, OP. I am ALL for people working from home rather than being forced back into the office. But if your issue is widespread among your generation - if people aren't picking up calls from their boss or have issues talking on the phone - well then yeah THAT's an issue.

I'm in the camp of boss should be allowed to, but my "phone" is now a device that is also my primary workspace and I moved that workspace around in the office to go to in person meetings. And having headset/earbuds in is off-putting to some who walk by and are doing a quick visual scan to see if I'm on the phone/on a call. Sometimes I'm "green" but in a conference room with other folks having a call. A quick message asking I'm I'm able to take a call allows me to get situated and take the call.
