If your basis kid takes pre calc in addition to geometry in 9th grade, they are only doing one elective instead of two (extra math class deemed an elective). So I wouldn’t say “most” basis kids who transfer to walls make this choice, iMO not the worst thing to push calc off until 11th grade.

So they get an extra elective senior year when they don’t need to take math. And yeah a lot choose to do it. Some even take Geometry and AP Calc freshmen year (much more rare but has happened recently).

What is the point of front-loading the math if you are not planning to take a math class senior year?

I have no clue but remember that kids who come from Basis have a mindset of accelerating. I would guess they feel ‘behind’ to just be in Geometry freshmen year compared to Basis peers. Even if they don’t really like math that much.

Poster means that basis kids who transfer to walls are not given credit for geometry and have to retake it in 9th. (They are given credit for algebra 1 and 2) They will then do pre-calc in 10th.

You can pull it from the PARCC data. For the high school Class of ‘25, just over half the students at Walls took Geometry in 9th (and about 15% took Algebra I). For the Class of ‘26 at Deal, the school was about 40/40/20 between Math 8, Alg I, and Geometry. The Class of ‘27 seems to be even more heavily tilted away from acceleration (probably a COVID effect). There are kids behind and kids ahead but geometry in 9th is the norm.

The typical math sequence in DCPS is:
Algebra I
Geometry
Algebra II
Pre Calc
Calc (AB or BC)

Many Deal students do either Honors Algebra II or Precalc for 9th grade

It would be uncommon for a student coming from Deal to SWW to do geometry in 9th grade
