I agree, if they are over 70. Also if they are retired military or federal, or you are military, look at Falcon’s Landing in Sterling and The Fairfax near Fort Belvoir.

adding, that for Vinson Hall, all it takes is one of them to have been an officer - they do not have to be retired from the armed forces or a Federal retiree GS 14 or higher.

To the selfish question- I am not asking them to move here, rather the area they live in NE no longer has any friends or family, and they are quite frankly very bored there, and see that this areas offers more that they like to do- theater, museums, they have some friends here, etc. I had encouraged them to spend the entire year in Florida as they love their place there, but for various reasons that isn't their preference.

They spend October to April in Florida.
You want them as close to you as possible-like 10-15 minutes max.

agree the answer is entirely dependent on where you live. my parents did the same and live in the Promenade in Bethesda and would fit your bill if you live in that area but would be a dumb choice if you were in VA.

Why do your parents need to buy? Why not just rent and use the proceeds/savings from the sale of their home to help cover the costs of the condo/apartment or house? At their age, why would they want the hassle of maintaining another property? I ask because a relative of mine in the same age range recently moved to MoCo and sold the house with the intention of not being an owner anymore. Let someone else manage that.

Rockville has a very active senior network, senior classes, field trips, etc. . Rockville Senior Center in particular is highly regarded.

You could find a nice one level ranch home in 20851.

If you are in northern VA then Lansdowne Woods (used to be called Leisure World) is really nice and close to many conveniences (including Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc), hospital next door, town of Leesburg pretty much adjacent. It’s pretty much an ideal location if Loudoun county works for your family.

Many are in a large 55+ community there, but it's an hour+ drive from the close-in suburbs like Fairfax County, depending on time of day and ay of the week. It is not a CCRC, so as care needs increase, private arrangements would need to be made accordingly and caregiver availability in that area may not be what may be needed.
