Yes I knew it was illegal. People do it without thinking though, there’s no malicious intent.

It shouldn’t take a lot of focus to know shouldn’t stick out into the road.

No operator shall open the door of a parked motor vehicle on the side adjacent to moving vehicular traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so.

A violation of this section shall constitute a traffic infraction punishable by a fine of not more than $50. No demerit points shall be awarded by the Commissioner for a violation of this section.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to any law-enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services personnel engaged in the performance of his duties.

I’ve got 50 bucks.

Wannabe Lance Armstrong beware.

The OP seems to think this code section prevents loitering with an open door. I see no time limit. Only a requirement to yield existing traffic when opening the door. After that, the traffic should yield to the newly minted pedestrian. You don't exist in some indeterminate free-for-all state after exiting the vehicle and arriving on the sidewalk.

+1

Cyclists somehow manage to be the biggest a$$holes on the street, with no awareness, common sense, or consideration for others, while at the same time whining incessantly about how they’re treated.

Get the F out of the way.

I remember this incident. This is why I would almost always, always use the sidewalk side to get my kid out of the the car. It can be awkward and inconvenient, but it is so much safer.

+1 I see women standing in the street next to their van all the time with kids and just shake my head. One if the benefits to a minivan is you can easily get in/out from both sides.

Exactly! I have always arranged my kids’ car seats so that I can buckle them from the passenger side. I also teach my kids to always get it and out of the car on the passenger side and scoot over if needed.
I thought that was common sense.

Not only your drivers side door. Your doors on both side.
If you open your door on the curb/sidewalk side and it hits a pedestrian on the sidewalk, you are at fault.

Hello! I love you, bikers put in their place.

They're peddling down the street e eat.
Ignoring all traffic lights that they beat.
I think you are that guy a eye.
Laying hurt in the road and starting to cry.

Hello!
Hello!

Never load your kids street side when you have a minivan.

I cannot believe this was almost 10 years ago. It's so seared into my brain I would have guessed maybe 5 years ago. So tragic and preventable.
