+2, I went to UofA in state, and it means nothing to me, but the east coast and int’l students loved the SW. I can’t believe anyone feels the same about College Park. If the relationship fails, it will be fine. He thinks it’s about the GF but it’s really the adventure. The school is fine, if he’s better than the students he encounters, more opportunity for him.

When any kid wants to transfer, I'm a firm believer that they -alone- have to do all the work. Every single thing. And in his case, he'd have to get into the major. And how about -he- pays to visit the campus. Students visit before deciding. And in this case, since it's a transfer, he pays. I would say the order is: He Applies. Gets into the Major. He Pays for The Visit. Then, you consider what you will/will not pay for.

I would tell him our financial advisor told us we need the money for our retirement security and that we can cover the in-state portion if he wants to work for or get a student loan for the difference that would be his decision.

I transferred from an elite west coast school to UMD to be near my high school bf. We didn’t last, but I don’t regret it for a minute. Had I not done it I would have always wondered “what if?” And at the end of the day, my career is in basically the same spot it otherwise would have been, and I had a LOT more fun in college.

UMD accepted sooo many more AP credits than the other school, so I was able to graduate in 5 semesters total and it was a wash financially.

My only hesitation is whether he wants to stay out in the southwest after college. My UMD degree got me great jobs here, and a U of A degree will do the same in Arizona. But if the goal is to come back to the east coast after graduation, it’s harder. I had to put in 5+ years before I had enough experience that my degree was irrelevant and I could search for employment outside the dmv.
