I don’t want to derail this thread but the bathroom thing comes up on every ACPS thread. I’m so sorry for all of you- that just blows my mind.

My kids at DHMS and W&L never use the restroom due to those issues. First thing they do when come home is use the bathroom.

The transportation department may be tied for worst with the communications division, which is saying something. The transportation department assigns my youngest in elementary to a bus stop 2.5 miles from our home. The school is much closer to us than the assigned bus stop. Her address is correct in Power School, and her older sibling gets assigned a bus stop near our house. We all live together, no divorce or second parent situation. I tried clearing it up last year, and the woman who answered the phone kept asking me why we got a transfer out of Brooks and if it was due to overcrowding. We are not zoned for Brooks and did not get a transfer out of Brooks. I could not clear it up, gave up, and drove my youngest to school all last year. She has the same bus stop assigned this year. I give up.

We need to have some kind of awards ceremony! Maybe quarterly, to engender some competition among departments to get off the awards list.

Unbelievable. I am sorry. I would send e-mails to the principal and vice principals asking for the information because this lack of information is unacceptable.

It is unacceptable, but it’s not principals’ fault — this is handled by the transportation dept. Unless you’re suggesting that a letter to the principal might be helpful because she/he can push it up the ladder to show higher-ups how bad it is? That sounds like a good idea.

The fact that key members of SB send their kids to private is a huge comment on ACPS. That people continue to send their kids and expect it to be better has be ROFL. We pulled ours out and if your kid is fine in public, let me tell you they would excel in private. It's a lot of money but damn if my kids are gonna be in that s*hole of a place - all the publics suck from grade 3-12 in ACPS. The MS violence is real. Just because your kid survives it doesn't make it right. As a parent I would not want my kid to ever go through that anxiety even if they can handle it - it's symptomatic of so much bad that's wrong with ACPS.

Hear, hear! Hope homework is eliminated. Hope TAG, honors and AP classes will be eliminated. Hope all the remaining Covid money is spent on ELL and students with disabilities.

I assume this is sarcasm but it missies the mark to the extent it implies that ACPS views helping its students with disabilities as a major part of its focus on “equity for all”
That's been clarified--it is "racial equity" now. No chance of students with disabilities being part of it. In fact, students with disabilities are more segregated than ever--even using separate entrances at schools.

I'm disgusted that our ACPS elementary website has standard ACPS language including that racial equity is at the center of every decision. Not gender equality, not LGBTQ, just racial, and it doesn't even seem to mean all races, in practice.

Wow - https://www.acps.k12.va.us/

i think the “racial equity” language is a meaningful change in wording even if I wonder if it was deliberate.

For all my issues with ACPS, I do think there are some focuses on equity beyond “racial” - for example transgendered student rights. Because of that, I question how that change ended up on the website.

Need to live their truth (and voting habits).

What would getting rid of TAG, Honors and AP do? Why do these kids not deserve a quality education? I would never send my kids to ACPS if that was the case. Thank goodness they are graduated and benefitted from an excellent education It was a few years ago but these comments baffle me.

My kid is a junior at ACPS, and is taking 6 APs, so there are some. I haven't heard of any not being offered except possibly art. TAG could be better in upper grades but is still available.

I don’t even have kids there anymore but since I have a magic wand-

1. Make it safe for all students and staff. The wand will figure out how.

We can figure out academics later but this is a priority.

Our ACPS elementary (George Mason) didn't have homework for the six years we were there. That was by design by the then principal who said that homework wasn't equitable and many of the teachers followed suit. I never saw a classroom test or any graded classroom work after K. The school has cratered and is the only elementary school that is still hemorrhaging students.

Eliminating TAG, honors and AP is what Hutchings advocated/advocates for. The current superintendent was his pick so it's very likely she subscribes to his equity philosophy. It's assumed that he (and now Mozingo) are well paid consultants to the district.

I do hope the $54 million ACPS collected in covid funds gets spent on ELL and students with learning disabilities. They were treated horribly and completely failed during COVID. The UMC kids and parents benefit immensely from going to an urban, failing district when it comes to college acceptances. It's time to right that wrong.
