Yes, I get it - Duke is "elite" and Wake isn't considered so. That said, many who consider Duke as a reach consider Wake as a target. They also probably also consider UNC, which last I checked was tied with Wake in the rankings. There is crossover in the applicant pools.

Not sure why people need to crap all over Wake-it is a school full of high achievers. It is a step below the Ivies and other Top 10. A 25% acceptance rate (and I am hearing it is closer to 20% or even lower now) is still a tougher admit than many schools. I think the applicant pool is a bit more self-selected than some of the other schools in the T50.

There are a lot of people who look at both Wake and Duke. I didn't because I just never personally had any interest in Duke.

Yes, most people would put Wake a notch below Duke. Wake is a T30 school, though - has been T25 some years on USNWR.

Your chances of getting into Wake are slightly better than Duke. That said, I did have classmates in the 90s who decided to attend Wake over Duke. It does happen.

By your definition, every private university is a rich kid school. Which would make most of the T50 or so schools rich kid schools. In which case, it’s a meaningless label.

Preppy is still a thing there.

My child will be a freshman there next fall. The school seems to put a lot of weight on leadership skills, three kids we know who are attending were either president of senior class, or president of high school.

My student was looking for Southern, strong academics, good spectator sports, and the possibility of Greek life. I think Wake is a target school for kids who kids who have Duke or Vandy as a reach. Baseball and soccer were both ranked number one this year, and football/basketball have been respectable in recent years.

New president came from Vandy a year ago. Facilities at Wake are very nice. The medical school and research labs are in new buildings off campus at Wake downtown, accessible via shuttle from main campus. Many kids come into school with pre-professional focus (pre-med, business, or pre-law).

They have been putting money into dorms and students typically spend three years on campus. Fraternities and sororities are in university housing so there is greater oversight.

The school is a really nice size, 5500 students. Wake claims even introductory classes are less than 100 students, but can’t vouch for that yet.
