That said, I wouldn't admit to it, much less brag about it. I check out the parents of kids my kids are close with, the boyfriends of my close friends, a new boss I couldn't stand, etc... I'm certain that if I were dating these days I'd be googling for as much info as I could find (without paying for it). I think it's kind of human nature.
No, it's YOUR particular kind of nature. I don't do that and no one who is close to me does that.
That's funny, almost everyone in my circle of friends admits to it.
Because everyone around here is worried they are living next to a serial killer.
I found out that the father of one of my son's friends was a warlord. We didn't allow them to play together.

Be cognizant of who you accept follow requests from on social media. Be cognizant of your social media settings. You don’t want to allow “friends of friends” to see your profile, because then you have to trust your friends to have the same vetting process.
He could learn a lot just by clicking through your following list at people in your circle with lax privacy settings.

Every now and then an old name from the past pops into my head so I turn to Mr. Google to see where he and she is nowadays. It's surprising how much basic info you can gather from a 15 minute google search to give a pretty good idea of how well they're doing in life.
What I find intriguing are the people with absolutely no internet history anywhere, at least after a certain year. I'm assuming they're either dead or failed into obscurity.

Your ex (I agree - you dodged a bullet w/this guy!) likely could have gotten his hands on the info on his own, away from work.
Except you can use a pseudonym in various places, including Los Angeles when you buy a property, for the "records" and in fact, for 100% privacy

You can find a lot by googling and putting the pies together OP. Dana search is free and then it takes you to a paid page for more info. I, 'd be super creeped out. I headed a retained executive search firm. You can find a lot about a person in the Internet and AI age.
