Think about this for two seconds. Raccoons are literally everywhere. Do you know any children who have died from raccoon worms? This is like people who freak out about mouse droppings.

Pine Sol! Empty trash can. Add drops of Dawn + blast water from a hose. Fill to halfway. Allow to sit in sun for a few hours.

Dump + rinse. Add Pine SOL to bottom trash can + wipe inside and outside the lid w/ paper towel soaked w/ few drops of pine sol.

Apparently raccoons are deterred by strong scent! Worked for me after suddenly having raccoon problem.

My neighbor got attacked by a rabid raccoon in her backyard.
We never put anything on our trash to keep the lid closed. I’m sort of an amazed we have t had problems. We don’t put a lot of food in our trash though because we compost and the compost lid locks.

Does this mean you all don’t put trash out the night before pickup?

Bleach it out really good, in fact I'd let bleach stew in there a LONG while then rinse.

I'm not sure why someone is so intent on minimizing the danger of this. Racoon roundworm crawl up a person's spinal column causing mental illness, which just looks like mental illness. Until one day they reach the brain stem, and the person goes completely insane before dying. No one does autopsies of death due to mental illness, so this is easy underdiagnose.

40% of racoons carry the worm and are shedding cysts. It's everywhere. Remember that people used to line their walls in asbestos and paint them with lead. Just because you haven't heard about it, don't assume it's not a public health crisis.
