My SIL moved away from Annie prior to med school basically because she wanted to come across as more professional. Only her mom calls her Annie 10 years later. Asking her about it, she liked Annie growing up but the switch was a pain with multiple friend groups.

I also had a college roommate who went by Bobby until college! It is similar. Certain names sound like kids names to me (some -ie and -y names stand out) . I think little orphan Annie doesn't help with this particular name either.

I know several people with longer names who go by Annie with family and close friends. Including an Annabel and an Anika. "First syllable+y sound" is maybe the most classic nickname format in the English language? I know people who don't like nicknames with that pattern and went out of their way to find names that couldn't be shortened this way to avoid it, because it's so common. So it's weird to argue that OP can't give her kid a longer name that starts with "An" and call her Annie. It sounds totally normal to me.

Weird, the Annie I knew in college was Leanna. It’s almost as though your experience isn’t universal.

The two Annies I know are both actually named Anna. Not sure how that came about as one is no shorter than the other.
