Really don't get parents who buy their kids iphones of all things. Even if you get the a smart phone, it doesn't need to be an expensive iphone.

I have a 7th grader. He doesn’t know one kid, actually only one kid, who doesn’t have an iPhone.

Rich parents are nuts. I won't even buy an iphone myself. Had one once and it wasn't so much better than an android to be worth the cost.

you can get a flip phone with Tracphone. My DC uses the flip phone at sleep overs and when at practice for sports. DC will not get a real phone until later.

Nah, not having the latest gadget or what everyone else has builds character.

I think Apple Watches are the worst for kids because they are wearing it and don’t turn it off. During school, this turns into a huge distraction. THe phone is put away, put down etc, but the watch is strapped to your kid. We are phasing phones into our lives. Our kid as a wifi only iPhone. If needed, he can get on public Wi-Fi, but that is extra steps so he at least has to think about how much of an emergency it really is. If it is a real emergency, he should be dialing 911 regardless and satellite coverage should kick in.

School time feature on the watch solves the school fidget issue.

Have you asked teachers about that? Because as a teacher I can say the watches are distracting.

So just being able to function in a modern world.

Remember, other than a phone it’s a newspaper, calendar, wallet, car key, emergency device, etc.
