The big question is: why do intelligent women marry men with substance problems? Alcoholics and drug addicts do not change UNLESS they want to change.

Depends on the state. Where I live it is legal to record a conversation if ONE party in the conversation knows there is a recording. That could be you, OP.

Why are Ring cameras legal?
Because they record public places where there is no legal expectation of privacy.

I'm so sorry OP. I was the kid in this situation. My mom stayed until my little brothers (twins) were 18. Now as a mother, I understand and commend her for giving up 30+ to protect us, but also feel horrible that her life was just on hold and traumatic all of those years.

I truly dislike my husband today, and some other days. But today takes the cake and I am about 5 minutes away from storming a family barbecue and potentially causing a scene.
My husband has had a drinking problem. It has been a problem for a while and caused serious contention in our marriage. I do not trust his family because they all also have drinking problems.
My husband left today for a barbecue at 12:30. I thought it was a lunch barbecue. It is 4:30 now (we are on the west coast). My husband telling me (with slurred speech) they are just now beginning to eat. I asked him how many beers he has had. He says 3. I don't believe him at all, nor would I drive after having 3 drinks.
I have half a mind to drive over there right now, pick my kid up and call the police on him and ask for a breathalyzer while he's in the car. I am so done with his sh*t. I yelled at him. Not politely at all, I told him I was done with his sh*t and I am coming to pick my kid up, I told him not to come home. He "says" 3 drinks in 4 hours, I know it's not that. I feel like I am losing it. I am pacing in my house, nervous about my kids safety and the fact that my husband would consider jeopardizing his safety.
Also, he's had three DUI's. Lovingly, this was not disclosed to me until after we married and had to join our car insurances.
You knew how much both he and his family drank but married him anyway. Only a fool would think he was NOT going to drink at a family barbeque. So the question is why didn't you also attend as the designated driver?

OP here. Yes, correct. This is why I'm scared to divorce him. I could ask in our custody an order that he does not drink around our son, but I know he would break that.
My mom stayed with my alcoholic dad because of this and now knowing this as an adult I’m 100% sure I’d be estranged from both parents had they have gotten a divorce and I had to spend “weekends at dad’s.” My mom is a saint, but she’s also the one who married an alcoholic so, consequences.

Send an email to a friend documenting the issue. You should divorce but know he will get 50% custody s as Md don’t waste your money fighting that. Bring up the alcohol and make him swear not to drink and drive the kid. Wait till kid is six and then get a smartwatch for your kid and tell him not to get in the car with daddy if he’s been drinking and have him call mom instead. Get your kid in therapy now so there is third party documentation. Sorry but that’s the reality of your situation.
