The fishes episode I just had to fast forward through. So tedious.

I didn’t find it tedious, it was upsetting but it was also brilliantly done and the layers are fascinating, like the stories being told in the background while JLC is talking to her kids. I need to watch it again, but that episode is a rough ride.

I loved Season 2 - my favorite episode was the Ritchie episode, also the Marcus episodes - their journeys and experiences are pretty stable and not as chaotic as some of the other episodes

Why did Carm break it off with Claire? Did he have some sort of crisis when he was stuck in the walk-in? Was that the "guilt" talking?

SPOILER for season 2

Like many kids who grew up with a verbally and emotionally abusive alcoholic parent, Carm doesn’t think he is capable of being in a normal relationship. He doesn’t think he deserves love. He is self sabotaging. He is stuck in a cage of his own making - he is the one who dropped the ball and forgot to call the repair person for the walk in door handle, and instead of blaming his own procrastination, he blames the phone call from Claire.

That’s a no from me. I loved both, but I don’t think anyone who didn’t like the first season would like the second. The first was more conventional and the second season has much more risk taking, experimenting with tempo, pacing - you have to know and love the characters to enjoy it. At least I think.

I did not understand the ending of s1. Why did the brother hide all that money and continue going into debt instead of paying it back? Or, why even take out the “loan” isn’t he first place, clearly there was money. This weird hoarding $ path didn’t didn’t help the new brother; he still had to pay back the loan.

Did I miss something?

He wanted to give brother money and didn't trust himself with it.

But the brother just had to pay back the debt the dead brother incurred by hiding it.

We found it very stressful to watch with all the yelling, and didn't really like any of the characters. I guess I should have researched it more, but everyone was saying how good it was. I just don't get it.

That’s a you problem.

The show sets up a number of interesting characters, but doesn't have the bandwidth to explore their backstories and do them justice.

I feel like all of season 2 is them exploring people's backstories no?

Well, obviously not “all” of it.

I relate so hard to Carmy parenting my 5 kids 8 months - 11 years. Where hes all calm, moving through the chaos and then just freaks out "Get OFF my beeping expo line! Get me a sharpie that WORKS!" The accidental stabbing scene... that happened with my 6 year old attacking his big brother with metal tongs last year. I also worked in a kitchen years ago (BEHIND!) I was not anticipating that this is how I would relate to the show but I love it. The excessive Chicago references were a little try hard in beginning of Season 1 but then the writers found their balance. Former Chicago resident ... Syds scenes actually made me nostalgic for riding the El. Pretty sure a quick scroll of CWB Chicago's twitter would zap that but do wish I had a time machine to 2005-2008 for a day.

that is super upsetting.

agree the abusive narcissistic mother character was not original but it made a lot of sense and gave much more perspective and JLC was insanely good. I also did not enjoy it but feel like knowing it was important and def enjoyed the others especially the ritchie one.

I know that Jamie Lee Curtis is a great actress (just winning an Oscar and all), but this is the absolute best I have ever seen her. She was amazing and the writing was spectacular as well. You're right that we see plenty of insane mother types in TV and movies, but these folks must have done some serious research into dysfunctional families to be able to demonstrate the mother's steady decline over the evening while her children are unable to stop it and repeat the same behavior over and over again hoping for a different result. It was simply brilliant.

Carmy being trapped in the fridge is a metaphor of him being "put on ice" to cool down. He was working through his issues out loud and he had no idea Claire was on the other side of the door when he made the decision that she was impeding his ability to operate and manage the new restaurant. Ironically, being removed from the kitchen allowed the rest of the staff to step-up to the task and make amazing progress on their own, meaning maybe Carmy could have a personal life in addition to the restaurant.
