20-something years ago, my old agency did an investigation of a well-known Peruvian chicken place in Wheaton that only took cash. When they did a search warrant on the owners house, they found millions in cash hidden behind the drywall. Owner did some time in prison and the restaurant re-opened when he got out and is still in business today.

A shocking number of low pay jobs like house keepers commit tax fraud. But you know what? It’s because their customers absolutely won’t pay more. If you pay 150 bucks cash, you’d need to pay 200 for a schedule c filer to get the same take home pay. Do you want to pay 30% more for your services? You are complicit and an accessory to the fraud. It’s fine. We all are. Just don’t act with such righteous indignation.

I live in an outer burb of a large metro area, and even farther out from me is a farm stand business that has great stuff, but is Cash Only because they cannot get a good enough internet connection to take cards!!!

They would like to, but instead have to post Cash Only on their FB page every day.

Yes. It’s how their kids can be on free and reduced lunch and other supports.

I really don’t believe a lot of the income reports about how many people are actually under the poverty line. I see it with my own family too. Tons of under reporting. My aunt owns a housecleaning company. Most make pretty good wages, but of course they work very hard for it.

Ability to surveil and control you... See countries where "negative interest rates" have resulted in seizures from bank accounts, etc.
