B meets this past Wednesday were indeed cold, but both teams at ours really had a can-do attitude and just got it done. Kids stuck to it, adults stuck to it, and folks were kind and mutually supportive. I was proud of the kids and proud of the teams.

To the PP new to summer swim in this area, everything is warmer in July. But by year 2 or 3 the kids are ready for the cold and it bothers them a lot less. Meanwhile just bundle up like crazy and try to keep them in the water at practice rather than hopping in and out.

DH is heated. I assume the heat is in because my kids swam at 7am every day this week and did not complain.

Our team pool isn't heated and hasn't yet hit 70 degrees. My kids have been miserable this week. Morning practices have been extremely cold.

To be honest, it's our first year and every practice and meet has been too cold for my kids. Last Saturday at the A meet it was both cold (low 60s) and windy at 7 AM and the water was freezing (below 70 degrees). My kids have been pretty miserable. Is it normally like this?

Yes. Read the posts from those of us who aren’t members of swim team. It’s easy to think everyone does it. More don’t.

I’m from the north, way up north, and swim wasn’t nearly as popular as it is here. I didn’t know anyone on a swim team and we didn’t have community pools with wait lists like there are here. My kids aren’t on the summer swim team because no one in my house wants to swim when it’s cold or raining.

Same. I had one friend in high school who swam for a swim team, it was all indoors. There simply was not this community pool/outdoor swim team structure. Many people had backyard above ground pools, and it certainly was cold early in the summer but heats up quicker.

No one forced you to go though. It was a B meet, if you/your kid didn’t want to be there then just don’t go. They don’t re-schedule B meets, so there was really no downside to holding it as scheduled.

Amen. Don't stop everyone from competing. Just opt your kids out if they are uncomfortable or aren't having "fun"

This was certainly not a regular thing. My club swimmer didn’t swim while pool was closed then did the mask unless on the water for a few months. They didn’t all just move to outdoor pools.

There is one school in MD that had a swim team that practiced all year outdoors in a pool with heaters strong enough to do this. There was an article in the Post or something.

The meet should have been cancelled last night. Like someone said, MCSL B meets are supposed to be fun. There is NOTHING fun about standing around shivering in a cold, wet, windy rain and swimming in cold water. Especially for the little kids. Most people left halfway through (or earlier) and there was no cheering, halftime, snack bar, etc that makes a meet fun anyway. It was just miserable all around.

My teens swam last night and survived. Most of the older kids showed up and bonded over freezing. More of the younger showed than I was expecting.

We didn't have a meet scheduled last night, but our pool did close yesterday, and morning practices were cut short yesterday and cancelled today.
