This has always been so weird to me. Coming from an upbringing with nothing and basically abject poverty wherein I didn't even have a choice if something was going to be done by someone else or hired, I'll say this - just because someone can survive and suffer doesn't mean they should. There's no "coming from the gutter" award. I'm now in a position to pay for things for my kids - and I do, because I can. And my oldest is well into adulthood - productive and self-reliant and all the things. Having the means to make things easier on your kids so they can focus on school and fun is not infantilizing them. I'm able to help and I do. It's so weird that ppl want their kids to do the suffer olympics just because - I promise you all the true life lessons are still be learned.

It sucks that she's moving into the apartment in this condition. Sadly, it's totally believable that a college town landlord would let this happen and face no repercussions.

I agree with others that this is the bigger issue, not the furniture. Definitely document everything.

I'd would pay for the cleaning, assuming it's not a hardship. It would make such a big difference in feeling at home.... and your kid and housemates would still be cleaning (hopefully!) on a regular basis so it's not like they are being totally coddled.

I would not pay for the furniture assembly, they can do that on their own.

What she does is get a six-pack and a pizza and has a couple friends over to help with the furniture assembly. Easy.

I would probably pay to have it cleaned BUT would absolutely have her figure out how to put furniture together.

Landlord is keeping the security deposit of the previous tenants because they didn't clean. I would ask nicely and if he says NO, take a video and pictures.. When your DD moves out, this will be your proof of it's initial condition.

Depending on the exact place OP's daughter is, that might not be an option.
All the other rentals in the college town might be exactly the same way--and probably a lot of them are owned by this same landlord.
Everything also might already be rented, dorms already full, etc.

The landlord is responsible for delivering the rental empty and clean. That is not on you or your daughter. I would address that first, or walk.
