last week i paid $360 for a full balayage and cut, i have long hair

this will shock DCUM, but i like my stylist so much, i actually tip her closer to 25%.

its expensive to live in the city. your hairstylist is not immune. if you like your hair stylist, then you need to help them afford to stay in the city.

It’s not price gouging when there’s plenty of lower cost equivalent alternatives. We have not lost our free will. We make choices.

Is baleyage more involved that partial highlights? Should one be more expensive than the other?

I'm ready to try this. I had a horrible cut and an ok color to cover gray 5 months ago and tried a new salon/stylist who has more experience. She and I disagreed over the color to cover my gray. I made it clear I wanted a lighter color than what she chose. She brought out the color board and showed me a color she said she'd use then lied to me and used a much darker color. She did not pull it thru my hair well. I paid approx 310 once the tips were included. It included a hair trim. Her scam is that she put in a darker color and the fix is that I come back in a week so she can put highlights and lowlights in. I don't want highlights. It will cost probably $150 or more. This will all cost me approx $500 for what should have been $250. No, I won't go back to her.

Yeah…agree. I’m not covering up gray (even though I’m in my 50s) just trying to make my mousey boring limo light brown hair look…. Better!

OP here. In a suburb of DC. My hair is medium-short. It is sounding like this is a normal price. Ugh.

Years ago, I remember reading you were not supposed to tip the owner of the salon, but then I read that that changed, and you tip everyone no matter what. On services this pricey, I only do 15%, whereas at restaurants etc I am guilted into 20%.

Thanks everyone.

A $90 tip? A tip should not be based on price

Your stylist will be mysteriously booked every time you try to make an appointment, if you stiff her on the tip.

You sound like the doordash guy. So now service providers will not do their jobs? I am sure their bosses will love that

The best stylists work for themselves, not the Hair Cuttery.

That is NUTS. But also your tip should have been minimum $60.

It is not to be based on anything, it is an optional amount of the givers choice.
