Yes. It makes me wonder about homeschooled kids in general.

Kids being homeschooled by college & grad school-educated parents is one thing; being homeschooled by parents who never went to college AND were homeschooled themselves is a whole other thing.

Not a lot of new information but really enjoying hearing the first hand perspectives.

I'm almost through the second episode, and as someone who casually watched some of the early Duggar shows, I think there's a lot of new information. Or at least, a lot of context around their religious beliefs. Freaking "eye traps" just about killed me.

You can thank the Home School Legal Defense Association for essentially completely de-regulating homeschooling! Now people can use whatever TF “curriculum” they want and it totally counts as school, and no one can say boo to them about it.

What's not explained, IMO, is how prevalent spanking was and is. Clearly the IBLP facilitates abuse, but this is only possible because abuse is so normalized in our society.

Try watching the Fundie Fridays video about the Pearls. That really digs into how this organization normalizes child abuse.

Jessa seems kind of half in half out, I would have been surprised to see her participate.

She's dependent on her father.

By design. He didn’t allow her to get a proper education that would allow her to support herself.

Exactly. I know an ex-IBLP person who used children's workbooks to learn everything she was either taught incorrectly or not taught at all. She did this after attempting community college on her own and bombing spectacularly, which is how she realized how mis/uneducated she was. So sad. She was finally able to complete her B.S. degree when she was 30 and she's doing well now.

Good for your friend! Wishing her the best; it’s so hard to over come the trauma and stress of growing up IBLP even aside from the practical challenges.

I think there is a small minority who are equipped to homeschool and do it well, so good for them, but it's also rife with abuse from people who want to indoctrinate their kids in these kind of environments and keep them unexposed to society at large. Anywhere with that level of secrecy has the potential for abuse to flourish. It's very problematic and why countries like Germany don't allow it.

The whole thing is tragic. Especially the systemic, unrepentant sexual abuse of girls.
