My MIL is one of the best women I know, and I feel very lucky to have her in my life. I hope my future DIL feels the same way about me one day.

I never really understand this sentiment

I wish Mother’s Day to a lot of people who are not my mother - my sister, my girlfriends. mothers of my kids, the greeter at the restaurant … Why wouldn’t I take 2 min to call the woman who birthed the man of my dreams, whom without I wouldn’t have my previous kids, who make me a mother. I am in the minority but I am most grateful for my MIL. She wishes me a Mother’s Day as well. And.. I’m not her mother

And never once in 15 years has dh bought a present for my mom, but I'm sure all MILs think their DILs should buy presents.

I am 98% certain my DH has done nothing for his mom. Oh well! That’s his role. He may order a $100 garbage bouquet tomorrow. Fine. If she’s unhappy, she can tell him. I dropped the rope on her gifts AGES ago.

Thankfully my in-laws are active texters and there’s an active family chat. I’ll send some well wishes that way. I don’t plan to see her, so that’s all I’ll do.

I don’t expect a fuss, neither does my mom, so I DGAF if my MIL wants a fuss, it ain’t happening.

I don’t like my MIL and will only wish her Happy Mothers Day if I am sitting near my husband when he FaceTimes her. I would never call her on my own and in fact have blocked her on my phone.

I’ve never made this connection but I think you are spot-on.

Agree and you can add my family to the anecdata supporting your theory!

Yes, DH is out of town this weekend. I’ll have the kids call and talk to her. I’ll talk to her for a few minutes.

No, it’s my day to do as I please, not deal with her.

I think I’ve called my MIL on my own maybe 3 times in 22 years. We will however be with her on Mother’s Day this year, just by circumstance, we usually never spend that with either side as they are all long distance, and I will wish her Happy Mother’s Day. But only because it would be weird and awkward not to in person!

If my MIL was nice to me and didn’t treat me like a pariah that ‘stole’ her son, then I would call her.

My mom died when I was young. I would have loved to have had a MIL that I loved and that loved me. I tried for YEARS to be accepted but she’s a petty, awful person so I don’t try anymore.

No, she's not my mom. DH can call her.

Nope. But I only ever talk to my MIL when I see her in person. Which is maybe once a year.

No. Like you, I'll join the call with DH for a moment if I'm there. But honestly, she doesn't treat me like a daughter AT ALL. We have a friendly acquaintance type relationship, but she's more like a distant cousin than motherly towards me.
