I love my SUV which is a Ford Explorer. I could never imagine buying another sedan. It's great that the bottom of my SUV isn't getting scratched every time I drive over a pothole, or driving into a driveway. Also on the few occasions that I purchase something big, most of the time it fits comfortably inside my SUV.

I much prefer the SUV. Not that hard to drive. Easier to get in and out of. Don't have to rent something to take the kid and kid's stuff to college or back.

Hmm seems like most people like the SUV better.
I need to test drive one thats for sure.
We do have extended family who live with us and that’s why my husband wants the SUV.

Yeah, what PP said. Multigenerational household, or any time you're looking to put grandparents in the back, you need a minivan, not an SUV. So much better space, comfort, and sliding door access, for children and older adults.

Unless you're going Suburban or something, most SUV third rows are very uncomfortable and almost useless for anyone younger than 5 (because *you* need to climb back there to buckle them in) or older than 10 (because the space is small).

With the third row in use, there is a laughably small amount of cargo space, and the third-row passengers are in much greater danger in a rear-end collision, because their heads are closer to the rear window. IIHS ratings don't test in all seating positions.

NP who drives a Suburban now, and I agree. We had an Explorer before, and the third row was uncomfortable and hard to access. Pilot third row is slightly better, but you are also very close to the rear window as PP mentioned.

I do love my Suburban, but only got it because a minivan didn’t offer the cargo space we need for two large dogs who frequently travel with us. If you will be driving older kids and other adults around, and don’t need large amounts of trunk space, I’d go with a minivan.

If you want to regularly haul around more than 2 adults and 2 children a minivan is better IMO. They’re more spacious in the interior than an SUV and it’s much easier to get into the 3rd row.

how about parking it in tight spots?

I don't park in tight spots if I can avoid it because I hate door dings, but the cars have so many cameras now that if you go wide to park and that's not good enough, you ca always correct it.

If the car has good surround cameras it can be pretty easy to park. It depends on how high-end the car is. But in general I'd look for larger parking spaces for a bigger car.

Just an FYI to the OP -- I expect that Jeff will move this thread to the cars and transportation section of DCUM within the next 24 hours.

They make hybrid and electric SUV's now.

Tight spots are not for you. But any regular sized spot is fine.

I'm sure OP will do what 90% of SUV drivers do and just shove her vehicle into tight spots, park in "compact car" parking, etc. This is the way now.

I see this behavior with sedan drivers as well. Jerks are jerks.

+1 yes! And I just love sitting up higher. More fun to drive.

+1. I feel claustrophobic inside and it's frustrating to not be able to see the road ahead in heavy traffic.

Get a midsize SUV. You'll love the visibility from the higher driving position. Just make sure you feel comfortable in the seat so test-drive your final choice a few times. I have a Forester Touring and just can't get comfortable in the seat. Highly recommend getting parking sensors in front and back and folding side mirrors.
