Our rec 5th grade team was travelling more than some travel teams. Multiple matches in Purcellville, that took about an hour. The fields were nice though, really absorbing the rain.

Club swim and travel soccer mom here, swim is much more intense, particularly as they get into high school. It’s usually 4-5 days in a row of early morning prelims (6am or earlier) wake up calls, break around lunch for 3 hours, back at the pool for finals. Leave the pool around 8 to grab dinner before heading to bed bc it’s another early morning.

This year my swimmer will travel to 6 non-PVS meets. Most meets are 4-5 days but need to include extra days for travel. In addition to those travel meets, the PVS Open LC changed venues this year, and while it is semi local, it’s still a 1.5 hour drive so we will be staying in a hotel.

To me travel means you play kids outside of the organization. When my kids do rec sports, they only compete against other teams in the same organization. For us that had been MCSL, CYO, Montgomery Soccer, and a hockey house league.

Travel sports means they are traveling to other organizations. They have been on travel teams that took everyone, so I don’t consider that part of the definition. They have also been on rec teams (hockey) that cost as much as their travel teams in other sports. They have also been on travel teams that never traveled more than an hour for a game.

Sure - pay to play. Start outrageously early as soon as travel play begins - maybe 2nd grade?

Note that there will be A B C D and sometimes E or reserve teams.

Note travel tournaments may take you out of your own zip code and you’ll spend weekends watching in Alexandria watching your Fairfax kid play against another team from Springfield.

Make certain you buy your kid the whole kit to include warm up gear, team emblazoned tees and color coordinated socks and embroidered personalized duffle bags and backpacks. How else will everyone know that Logan is a travel soccer player?

I’m disappointed there is no rec league that continues for U10 and up …

Where do you live? Our rec soccer goes through high school.

My definition of travel in any sport is when we are paying a lot of money, over $1000 per season and likely much more, and there are more practices weekly than rec. The actual level of play and travel vary, since everyone can find a spot somewhere if you want for most pay to play sports. My kid is doing a very low level travel for a different sport right now to just get more practices per week and kids who actually show up to games.
