Correct. If the skin is broken, you need antibiotics because the bacteria in the dog’s mouth can (in rare situations) cause a nasty infection. Once you start to get sick, it’s harder to get control of the infection, so it’s best to act quickly. And yes, the doctor is a mandated reporter.

Also to clarify the dog was leashed, but had enough slack to come close to me as I walked by on the narrow sidewalk. Mans back was turned as he was tending to the other dog. So just really bad timing.

I did go to urgent care and received oral antibiotics and a tetanus shot since I had a puncture. Glad I did bc next day it got red and swollen but has since subsided as meds kicked in. Someone asked if it was just playful and nipped - no unfortunately the dog was not happy and latched on. Guy said he’s a rescue and gets scared of people sometimes. It was a very scary experience that could have been way worse.

You didn’t get the neighbor’s contact?? Arguably you could get a tidy settlement, and the dog would be put down and at no risk of harming others

When my son was a toddler he was bit on the hand by a dog when we were in petco; it broke skin but it was small. I was holding my son and as we walked by the woman who was holding her dog, my son reached his hand towards the dog and the dog bit him. The dog owners were really upset, and they called me numerous times to check on my son I just washed it with soap and water at home and used Neosporin. I didn't know it required a doctor visit; luckily it healed just fine without any problems.

I don't know why people sneak up on you or when your dog is barking at them they continue to walk towards you instead of pausing and letting you go to the other side. Nope! They keep coming!!

Uhhh no it was the dog owner's fault for not keeping their aggressive dog away from others. Yes little kids have no sense of safety and could easily put their hand up to protect their face. People do not "sneak up on you." It is your job to make sure your dog is leashed cannot reach them. The sidewalk is for everyone, and yes little kids like to run. At the very least, you should retreat up a driveway to let others pass safely.

A dog isn't aggressive if it barks at you. Barking is a way to communicate. It can mean "let's play" or "you need to get away from me" Dogs who are punished for barking will sometimes skip the bark and just go to the bite becasue humans aren't listening.

No, my kid was minding their own business riding on a bike when a dog ran after him on the street and bit him. Keep your dogs by you and on a short lease.

My dog didn't bite your kid so MYOB

Definitely report it. There should be a record for if and when the dog bites again.

A dog on my street was regularly left on a leash in the front yard. It bit the kids going to school.

VA has a one bite rule so it is good to have it reported.
