It sounds like she doesn’t know how to oil her pan. It should just need a thin layer of oil on it when you are donde. Now if you are leaving it wet and not oiling, she has a point.

If you put it in the washing machines, I would freak out too. It would come out rusted. Then, I have to scrape it, season it and all. I have a special metal thing for cleaning it.

If you just put some soap on it and then rinsed that really good and heated it, I do not see what the big issue is.

No one wants food made in a nasty cast iron skillet with rancid leftover oil on it.

Uh, yes they do.

Oh, sorry.

PP wants their food made in a nasty cast iron skillet with rancid leftover oil in it.

The rest of us understand that cast iron can be carefully washed with soap.

NO! You obviously have some Lodge shit “seasoned” pan that was never seasoned to begin with. You know nothing. I can’t believe anyone on the Cooking forum is saying this was OK. I expect better of DCUM Food.

I trust America's Test Kitchen a lot more than I trust some idiot on the internet: https://www.americastestkitchen.com/articles/5037-is-it-ok-to-use-soap-on-cast-iron

Drama queen. I clean mine with soap occasionally, because otherwise it's disgusting. I also re-season it every few years.

There is no need to wash with soap. It’s kind of like a vagina in that way.

+1. So long as the pan doesn't have actual holes in it, you can restore even a completely rusted out pan. People freaking out about one soap wash are ridiculous.

“No soap on cast iron” is a relic from when soap contained lye. If you knew as much as you think you do about cast iron, you would know that.

This is overstated for sure. Doesn’t ruin the seasoning unless the soap has lye on it.

THIS. this this this. Stop the nonsense.

My mom used to wash her big cast iron pan with soap and sit it on a hot stove burner for a minute to dry. It was fine.

My pans say not to put in the dishwasher. I put them in anyway. They are fine.

My cast iron pans are about 8 years old now and very well seasoned. I now use dish soap after each use, and they are 100% fine. Nothing sticks and they’re beautiful. I used to stress so much about them and go to ridiculous lengths to preserve them; it was beyond ridiculous, really. Re-season as needed, ensure no rust (if so, just scrape it and re-season), and life will go on just fine.

I wash mine with soap. No biggie. Running it through the dishwasher would peeve me though. Not because it ruins the pan, I just find that lazy. No skillets in the dishwasher.

Don't put cast iron in a dishwasher. It will rust. Cast iron needs a bit of "seasoning" aka oil coating to prevent rust.
People love cast iron because it retains heat so well and evenly. Otherwise it's a pain in the kitchen because you can't pop it in the dishwasher.
