Well this makes me sad. I lived in Dupont Circle right after college graduation in the early 2000s. It was awesome, as were so many other neighborhoods.

I think it became a 5 guys or some other awful place. I loved Au Pied...

Bottom Line on I Street downtown hasn't changed much at all in the 25 years I've been going there.

I don’t think anything feels that way, because the character of the city has changed so much since then.

Correct.

It really surprised me when brickskeller closed — they were really unique and it was always crowded. And it’s not like fancy beer has gone out of favor — I think it’s more popular now than it was 30 years ago.

A friend worked there. It was due to ownership/management not really knowing how to run such a business. The demand was there, but they failed when it came to execution.

I also worked there, and: this. They meant well (I guess) but it was just terribly run. Which was too bad, because we got the most interesting cross-section of people: LGBT, grad students, people from the embassies, and barflys. It was a mood.

Brickskeller has been closed for a long time at this point, for more than 10 years.

And it was a shell of its former self for about 5-10 years before it closed. You'd have to pick five beers off the menu before finding one they had in stock, and the food became a horror show.

The French place I remember was in georgeotwn and was something simple like Le Bistro or something. I don’t remember if it was in a standalone building though.

Was it Trattu?
