Detroit has excellent theater and cool vibe.
Canada is less than an hour a way.
You're never more than six miles awyay from a body of water in Michigan.
Hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, skating, tennis, running, swimming, sand dunes
Ann Arbor recently voted as best place to live in America. College Park, not so much.
Northern Michigan is exquisitely beautiful.
Great music scene.
No toll roads.

BS CS in LSA and BSE CS in n college of engineering are very similar with general education requirements differences.

Has anyone have first hand knowledge of either of the programs? It seems Michigan is better based on several comments if money isn't an issue.

CS majors don’t go graduate school

Yes, they do.

Not if they have any sense.

Why do you say that?

For Umich, is it CS Major in COE or LSA? Both takes the similar classes with LSA has 2 year of language requirements and COE has physics, chem, and multi variables and differential eq. 128 credits needed for COE graduation and 120 for LSA. Very tough CS program. EECS280 (first real CS class) has 1450 kids. Long waiting for help in office hour. 25% will drop/fail the class or take Pass/Fail. The next class EECS 281 is another killer class. If your child has lot of programming experience, it will be good in Umich, otherwise it can easily suck in the weeder classes.

Maybe in CS, but that’s about it.

Yes, they do.

I did, but my company paid for it.

Well, college park is just miserable. I’d go Michigan if I could afford it and not think twice.

We are considering UMD and other schools, but not UMichigan. We are local and know UMD is good. However, every time we drive over there the surrounding area is so unattractive compared to a college town like Ann Arbor or even Bloomington, IN. Route one is a bummer

we were at UM last week on a college visit and learned that because CS is the most popular major, UM is rationing the number of majors.
If your DC did not indicate CS major they are NOT GUARANTEED.
I think UMD has similar rationing (but only done once you enroll, and may be based on first year grades)

There are two CS majors at UM, one in the engineering school and one in LSA. I think the programs vary by 1-2 classes, and one is obvs a BS, while the other is a BA. Were they just referring to engineering or LSA? Just pointing this out for OP to check first.

Both are fairly comparable for academically but experience at University of Michigan will be better.

The Big 10 really is competitive with the Ivy League in CS and crushes them on the basketball court. Illinois is also great and is an international study destination.
I'd say Michigan but UMD is a great option. You might be able to get a little $ out of UMD in particular if you let them know your kid will turn down UM.

Ann Arbor, no question ....
Overall alum network, high quality overall academic reputation for the past 50 years, incredible on campus enrichment programs, phenomenally engaged and wicked smart student body, with a wide variety of top ranked programs...

On an aside, musicians, lecturers, politicians, etc. all stop in Ann Arbor and your kid will be able to say that he drank beer with a Michael Stipe type performer ....

All, including the ones mentioned in the OP, are absolutely gigantic public state schools with a bunch of public school kids. Same drunkenness & frats at all of them.

Oh yes, private schools with their plethora of prep students don’t drink and join fraternities.
