It's very considerate to wear a mask if you are sick.

I don’t think that’s what people are talking about. Wearing a mask when sick is different than wearing every day as a precautionary measure (and I’m sure sone of the would argue anyone with symptoms should be staying home).

The days of staying home for any symptom are gone for most reasonable people.

For a toddler wearing a mask with a runny nose is absolutely gross and disgusting and IMO developmentally inappropriate. Most 2 yo's can't even blow their noses.

This is why those kids should be staying home or parents called to pick up their kids. Its not fair to spread it to other because you are too selfish to care for your sick kid.

My kids each probably had a runny nose at least 40% of the time of their first year of daycare, as did every other kid at the center. Thank god it was pre-Covid so we didn’t have obnoxious hypochondriacs accusing us of being selfish for not wanting to lose our jobs.

The kids at my home daycare never masked since it was pointless, even during the height of a pandemic. They ate together and slept in the same room so a mask at all other times was pointless and theater. However, the sick and symptoms exclusion policy, and that point the close contact policy, was strict and there was never a Covid occurrence at daycare.

There is no more exclusion for symptoms just your standard sickness policies that were in place pre-pandemic.

If you can't handle your child being exposed to germs, group childcare is not for you.

Do they eat inside? Do they nap? All of that is done without a mask so masking in that environment is pointless.

Honestly, I’m surprised daycares are still masking.

How are people still this uneducated this late in the pandemic?

Cutting down exposure, either by limiting the number of people someone is exposed to (masking at times when a kid is moving around the classroom, but not when they are sleeping with probably 2 kids within a distance where transmission is more likely), or the time that they're exposed to them, absolutely reduces viral load which both decreases the likelihood of transmission, and the severity of illness.

I'm not saying that you should or shouldn't mask your kids. Masking is up to you and the decision should depend on a variety factors including the health risks of members of your household, and your tolerance for missing work and having other family members miss other commitments.

But judging people for the bolded is a sign you are clueless. It's like saying that if your child doesn't wear a seatbelt in one situation (let's say an ambulance ride) there's no point in wearing one in another situation.

Another factor is whether your child has issues with speech or socialization and struggles to be heard/understood with a mask on, which can lead to frustration and/or safety issues.

+100. I am multilingual and had professional diction training and I struggle to be heard and understood behind a mask; I can't imagine what it's like for little children still learning to talk.

Thank you. I really can't understand why in the United States specifically there has been such a strong reaction among liberals against people expressing concerns about young children masking. These concerns are real and valid and no it's not just parents trying to make excuses or be in denial about developmental delays. And the fact that some places have decided children need to mask when adults do not is just..I can't even.

Many liberals in our country are obsessed with Europe and want the US to adopt many of their practices (healthcare, childcare, work life balance, etc.) They basically self destructed upon finding out that Europe didn’t mask kids. But then doubled down of course 🙄

My sister’s daycare in California still *requires* masking indoors. Her 4 yr old has masked indoors, almost every day, for two years! I think it’s insane. They are, of course, in a very liberal area.

Yeah I can’t believe how many people are ok with their young kids masking that long, during such formative years for speech and social development. Shrug.

At our Silver Spring center I'd say it's around 50/50. I figured that was the norm but I guess not!

Is this an MCCA center by any chance?

Not the PP but we toured one a few weeks ago and that’s probably what I would estimate. Was a bit surprising at this point in the pandemic but then we’ve been at an in-hi e daycare where the kids never masked.
