My kid is approaching peak recruiting time (not saying kid will go to a top program, or even D1 at all, but kid is very good wants to try and see what happens. Is open to other levels). This upcoming season DC will not see much if any playing time at HS or club (same coaches). We have our own views about why this is but it is irrelevant, frankly. We have not control here.
So if you've gone through this:
-what did your kid say to coaches? How was this addressed/explained? (Clearly, will not mention our opinions as to lack of time. We have never brought up our concerns, complained to coaches, etc. We know we cannot.)
-How did you get film and exposure when the kid isn't playing?
My kid is truly going to get screwed, losing an almost entire year of meaningful play time. And this is going to really affect the process. How can it not? It's disheartening to see this playing out. Leaving our club isn't an option.

I mean, if your kid isn’t good enough to earn playing time for coaches in HS and travel, they probably aren’t actually being recruited for college, right? Or is this another delusion by the parents?

My kid went D1 and had offers to choose from and not a single kid on his high school team got an offer and 1 one on his Club. HS wanted to put him on JV because they wouldn’t cut seniors (no matter how bad) and the club coach was truly an idiot who put in the daddy ball kids/favs. Around that time the team started falling apart and losing yet he kept giving those kids all the minutes. Those dads were at every practice high school and club and literally would have wiped the coach’s @ss if he asked.
College recruiters don’t play that game. In fact, it was detrimental to their sons.
Your kid got really lucky. College coaches tend to not care about warm up lines when they are watching tournaments. In general, if a kid wants to play in college, they need to play on a club team that will give them minutes either in front of coaches or that they can tape and send to coaches

Anonymous wrote:My son did not get playing time for HS or club for various reasons.
The few times he was in he created a video.
He luckily went to 1 event where the top player could not play and he did get some visibility.
He spent every week reaching out to his top 5 colleges. Talking to coaches, etc.
He agreed to go to a boarding school for a PG year but at the last minute… literally the last day of senior year for applications for athletes he got an offer to be a preferred walk on.
We believed he was not getting playing time for reasons other than ability or attitude and went for it.
He went D1, started freshman year, got a scholarship and was an all American.
You have to believe in yourself and not let others hold you back.

The question has nothing to do with the reasons. But how to work around.
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:What sport? Each sport is different. But most mean you have to change teams. There is very little chance of being recruited if your kid isn’t playing. Like next to none.
Sounds like baseball or softball given the time of year
Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Great player + great attitude but doesn’t get to play in high school or club? Someone sounds like they are deluding themselves, OP. Maybe the coach is your ex and still bitter about the breakup?
Lol. No. Kid played this year. And played extremely well. Team makeup changes next year.

NP. Come on. This is almost absurdly idealistic. There are many terrible reasons this happens, including racism, bias against the kid for reasons totally out of their control, classicism, etc. I’ve seen coaches blackball a kid because a sibling ten years earlier was not good. I’ve seen coaches refuse to play a kid for reasons that in the employment context would be overtly illegal.
I have one kid who is a current college athlete and another on the way. I have been through it. You people who believe in the myth of meritocracy in youth sports are ridiculous.
+1
Thank you stating this and doing it in such a non-inflammatory way. We know a D1 recruit who never got playing time on a team and no one ever knew why.
