Coincidentally about 40%are ALDC at Harvard


Slight correction -- I believe I read that it's 40 percent of white students at Harvard are ALDC (athletes, legacies, or donor/dean choice etc).

Not true. DS is at NU and I write the checks. More like $81K. Housing is mandatory for two years but then the options are much cheaper off campus (or can be). The last 20k of those costs are housing and mandatory meal plan. Nobody buys books much anymore.

NP. The link above is to the "college tuition compare" website, NOT to the Northwestern website. And see the fine print at the bottom of that page: "Cost estimates for 2023-2024 are based on last year's rate of change." In other words, it's the random website's estimate.

However, I'd guess the actual tuition increase will end up being close to the random website's estimate, due to inflation.

Don’t worry. It’s not the typical college. It’s the “luxury” colleges. Plenty of affordable alternatives.

Whether 90k all in or 90k for just tuition, it has becoming insane. College was expensive 25 years ago but do-able. It's simple not do-able for way too many these days.

USC was my kid's #1 choice.
I'm grateful USC is generous with National Merit Finalist scholarship. It turned out about same as UVA instate.


Congratulations! And UVA was a fantastic backup plan. Things work out I guess.

USC was my kid's #1 choice.

That will be easy for us to cash flow since that’s what private school tuition + ECs + food is for our kids already. Maybe that’s part of what schools are thinking of when they set tuition.

If you take away the transportation, extra dining, personal expenses, etc the cost you are actually paying the school for tuition, fees, housing, meal plan is 83k.

There is absolutely no reason why a middle class kid should be going to an expensive private school. It doesn’t make sense. Go in state and take on the least amount of debt.
