What's the reason for doing this? It can't be lack of dorm space in the fall because why would space open up in the spring? Do kids drop out after 1 semester? And UVA Wise too.


Partly dorm space because students go to study abroad or drop out. Partly because if a student starts in Spring the college doesn't have to report their GPAs/test scores in their official numbers so they won't bring down their profile.


Huh, interesting. I’m seeing reports of more and more schools presenting this as an option to some kids, even smaller schools. I find it off putting. Going abroad first semester probably isn’t the best way to start college for most kids


I agree, also lots of guaranteed sophomore transfer pathways.

Rejected. OOS (MD), 35 ACT, 3.9-ish UW in full diploma IB, significant extracurricular that turned into a part-time job with a lot of responsibility, and demonstrated interest by touring and going for an interview. Ah well. I don't think they would have given DC merit money and it's a pricier OOS than we were considering, but it still stings a little as it felt like the Goldilocks school and DC loved it.

I understand, and thank you! Spain is the only one my DD would be willing to go to, so it’s a relief to hear a positive story. I’ve read some not-so-good things about other locations.

Spain. I don't want to give too many specifics here because I don't want to out myself. The counselors at your child's high school may know others who've done it, and I bet most would be happy to share their experiences. I'm not trying to be coy and I'm happy to talk about it in my real life, just protective of our privacy on this forum.

My DC did it and loved it. Doesn't regret it at all. I thought the program was well run; they were communicative and professional. I think Verto has parent ambassadors, so if you get in touch with Verto, they can probably put you in touch with a local parent who can give you a call to discuss in-depth. The downsides are obviously not starting with everyone else and missing out on fall traditions. Also, spring semester, your child most likely will not be in a freshman dorm. Congrats to all. DD attended W&M and loved it. We are from Virginia but she did not see many of her classmates from school. That’s not what college is like. You meet new people from all over. Students think it will be like HS. It so much is not.
