That's really why the chasing prestige and "trauma" over college admissions is ridiculous. A really smart, motivated student will excel anywhere. Where you go is not nearly as important as what you do while there.

I work at a place that 20 years ago mainly hired only Ivy and near Ivys. The most impressive person on my team didn’t even go to college. She was hired as a temp when she moved to a city seeking adventure because her family was too poor to send her to college. Her supervisor saw talent and hired her permanently and she was on a steep promotion trajectory. I recruited her (internally) to my team and didn’t even know she didn’t go to college until she had been on my team for almost a year. She’s now a Director. She’s got amazing initiative and willingness to just take responsibility for whatever we throw her way.
