It's brutal down here right now. I've seen all kinds of mask resurgence and I've just assumed it's because of allergies. I think what happened is that people saw the value way beyond of wearing masks and have not issues throwing one on when the situation calls for it. This is such a situation.

Who do you think is going to give him flak? And why does it matter? If it's his friends - are they really? If it's strangers, agree with PP - time to teach who actually GAF. He'll never see them again.

Yes 100%. I got flak for not wanting to shake the hand of someone I was paired with randomly at a golf course in the South, and that was 2020.

I imagine he’d get similar looks in the DMV if he’s masking on a golf course. I don’t think that’s unique to the south.

Omg I would say hell yes. We went to TN during Covid and nobody masked. Up here it was masking galore! We didn't mask down there and were absolutely fine it turned out. But yeah down south they are totally different culture.

If he loves to play golf as I do then perhaps he will just play with his mask on, explain if he feels like it, and then ignore any feedback he gets that isn't helpful and enjoy playing golf. Maybe it will be a learning experience in not letting others ruin your fun.

I play golf all of the time in Hilton Head with a mask on. I have terrible allergies to grass.

FWIW, we were just at an outdoor high school sports tournament in NC, and there was a player wearing a mask the whole time. No one cared.

Yes, OP, as someone who found out that wearing a mask really helps with allergy issues, I've found that other people really hate it. And the mask helps enormously with pollen allergies. I wear it in the DC area and some people even make fun of it here, even if they know why I am wearing it.

I would just not go if I was him. Would be concerned he would be pressured not to wear the mask and come home sick again.

He can play golf anywhere. This seems utterly pointless.

I enjoy a lot of things I can no longer do for various reasons. It is what it is.

He will probably get a bit ribbed for wearing a mask outdoors at a golf course in the South. Lol I can’t think of a worse place to socially wear a mask, usually full of loud mouth well-to-do Trumpers.

You should work with your allergist to get weekly shots or sublingual drops. We're on our first season of the drops and they have been working quite well.

I have a kid who had terrible allergies for a while. For a few days, they would wear a cap with a brim, sunglasses, and a painter's mask. They still felt it but it was less than going without.

It’s also important to change and shower upon coming back inside, and wash the clothes if you have access to laundry facilities. Will you be there OP? Because if your sons reactions are so severe he could end up in the hospital then you definitely want a parent local just in case. Honestly this sounds too stressful to me, but if your main worry is other kids giving him flak for wearing a mask, then I guess go ahead?
