Who said OP’s husband was married to the oldest son’s mother? Who’s to say that the mother of the oldest didn’t end it with OP’s husband? Either way it doesn’t matter.

OP, keep it simple. Step son is at his mom’s house, he’ll be back in x days. Larla is his birth mom and you’re his step mom by marriage. It won’t make much sense to a 2 year old but that’s the truth and it’s ok. You don’t need to go down a rabbit hole or over explain.

Then redirect your kid and ask him if he wants to do an activity or something.
