I used to swear by hardshells but now I prefer soft - you can fit more in with front pockets if you find the right bags. I have a monos and I'm so surprised I don't love it more.
I SWEAR by my briggs. It really is crazy money but what I can fit in that thing is worth every penny. I have the soft 22in expandable with compression button. I have more affordable, stylish, lighter, popular luggage but damn if this is not the most awesomest carry on for what I can fit. That front pocket will hold 3 pairs of my shoes which is 1/2 the battle in terms of travelling for 7+ days. I can get a pillow, blanket, 3 pairs of shoes plus enough clothes for like 10 days in that thing. It's frigging amazing in terms of capacity. I looked a long time for a spinner that was 22x14 carryon size which can hold the most and I'm convinced this is the only one by far that holds the most. That front pocket is the bomb.
