Yes, and the fact that several years ago (pre-Covid) some of the southern schools (Alabama being one of them) made a choice to chase after the more desirable STEM students to better enhance the student body. I know of two who got into a rather impressive list of schools who chose Alabama, complete free ride house and all. They are taking honors courses and doing very well, took a little adjusting the southern hospitality, but they seem very happy and well adjusted whenever I see them.

Did you know that the new science/engineering building being dedicated on Alabama's campus is being named for Marillyn Hewson, the former Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer at Lockheed Martin? She is an alumni of Univ of Alabama. The science/math/engineering programs at Alabama are top notched and very competitive. In fact they contributed to the last space mission, just a fact. There are many amazing students, of all races, at the school. It is really not nice for your to refer to student at Alabama as though they are less then you, but I'm sure your mother must have taught you that long ago.

Not just top students. It’s a very common thing for anyone not raised in the south. And only someone raised to conform would think it’s “deviant”. Just because it’s your biggest life milestone in the south doesn’t mean it matters to people in other parts of the country. Many, many more people do not care at all.

I don't think it's a question of normal vs deviant. The girl I know that went to Alabama was deep deep into fashion, make up, post after post after post on social media of herself all dressed dup and modeling this or that. She is happy as a clam and joined a sorority. Would be my kids nightmare but if this is your thing...go ahead

My daughter is in recovery from anorexia and still struggles a bit with body dysmorphia. She doesn’t need a freshman hall full of girls who are rushing.

Plenty of colleges, for example Jesuit colleges, don’t have any Greek system at all. Or are you saying that is deviant??

I wish your daughter the best. This is, however, an extreme anomaly. Like the caase of an Iraq war veteran with PTSD due to explosives who much avoid any university with top Division 1 football program -- because they might shoot off fireworks as the players take the field or after the 1st touchdown. Also legitimate. But let's not extrapolate the rare case as normative
