Not a safety. Anyone who lives in MD wants to go their b/c of the tuition. Highly selective just because of the number of applicants.

Friend of my DC is very happy at Loyola Maryland. Very high stats, was not excited at first - lots of merit - loving it.

Please tell me what your kid ended up loving about it. I'm serious. I've wanted to like it for my first kid, and despite multiple visits, it just seemed half-ass'd... but that may be more a factor of they way they host their visits, and not indicative of the actual student experience. For my second kid, GMU seems like an obvious choice b/c he really doesn't care about the "traditional college/college town" experience, and it'd be quite convenient for him to be at college close by.
So, can you tell me about the good experience your kid had.

Was their safety, got a ton of merit aid (none at their first choice), and is now incredibly happy there

Yup, thanks, PP! Our kids have different strengths and academic interests and end up applying to many different schools as their "safeties."

Among DS's friends, I know kids happy at George Mason, U of South Carolina, and JMU after getting shut out of VT.

Elaborating on why-

It wasn’t a 1st, 2nd or even 3rd pick but ended up being small classes, internships and practical experience built into the program and lots of financial aid to match in state tuition.

Love to see the love for Fairfield. I sent three kids there—honors program is great, love that they are focused on undergraduate teaching and my kids had close relationships with faculty, and the accessibility to NY but with plenty of green space (and a huge number of wild turkeys).
