That can mean missing out on promotions, bonuses, better assignments, training opportunities, etc - decision makers will eventually be exposed to the behavior and will react. This will happen whether you're speaking of apparel with messaging which is inappropriate for a professional setting, or of sexually suggestive clothing, or which is sloppy, or too casual for the situation.

There are written and unwritten rules for professional behavior, and violating them will have consequences.
