For AOS/AET admissions, it seems they mail out the scores on the critical thinking/STEM test. Do the students receive them before the offers are posted on the portal or do they come later?

Loudoun Academy of Science, a tougher admit than TJ.

I guess it isn’t a right fit for my kid then. He wants to be able to socialize and enjoy high school along with getting strong academics. Sounds like the parents are really competitive too. He is in 6th in AAP Fairfax and were thinking about switching to LCPS in a year to get away from TJ and it’s toxicity, but never mind!

You should still move to LCPS. The county high schools all offer a slew of AP and DE courses and you can make your workload as rigorous as you would like. There isn't that much emphasis on the kids who go to the Academies, especially if you don't move to the Brambleton area, which I wouldn't recommend because that is where all the tiger families live.

How tiger were they, if they couldn't even get the school to sponsor a MathCounts team, which they nearly won last year? Kids had to attend as non-school competitors, where they were not eligible to participate in the team contest, and it probably wasn't the top students either.

PP was just using “tiger families” as a euphemism to cover their racism. They mean that Brambleton is very Asian, specifically south Asian Indian.

Its not racism to state that culturally the school is very different. And it IS. Factually. I agree that Brambleton is not the only school in LCPS that way. My friend who moved out there couldn't schedule any playdates for her kids because the families either don't believe in playdates and/or the kids are too busy at Kumon and Mathnasium. There are also not many kids in sports.

I hear the school recruits athletes from other zones. Independence is a top school in many sports.

It’s a Loudoun thing, not exclusive to any school in particular

This is not true. Brambleton is a neighborhood. It feeds multiple schools. There are tons of athletes who attend Independence. In fact, their parents lobbied VERY hard for their neighborhood to zone to Independence for that reason, which is why Indy is now overcrowded when it opened 4 years ago and Rock Ridge is sitting half empty.

Surprised to hear about the high workload. I thought that was exclusive to TJ. The science labs are considered to have some workload, but the math classes appear to be easy, with pretty much all the work done in class.

Despite AOS's being a tougher admit, I would say TJ is the better school, at least for now.
They have more high level classes available for students. At AOS, you do not get calculus until 11th grade.

Things might change if the teachers are forced to accommodate students who are not as capable.

That doesn't apply to just Brambleton, though.

Anonymous wrote:If they are deriving from top 3.5% students for each school, and suppose the school has 400 8th graders then does it translate to 14 kids for AOS and AET total or 14 kids for each of AOS and AET? Are any kids offered admission to both AOS and AET (of course they have to eventually select one but get both choices)? Does anyone know?

I thought they were using the same 1.5% quota. There are kids that get accepted to both. When they choose one(or neither), then the spot opens up, I think first to students from teh same school if they haven't reached their minimum quota, then to the general pool.
For AET, you apply to a specific pathway within the school.
