I left my name, number, and a note to call me in two weeks because I was leaving the country and wouldn't have access to my phone (this was in 2003). I then called my insurance company from the gate, just case. Unfortunately, the other driver called the police, who were waiting for me when I returned. It was one of the humiliating experiences of my life.

This is wild to me. About a decade ago I was living in Richmond. A lady in a minivan decided to gun it and make a left turn in front of my car on a rainy day. I slammed by brakes, but still t-boned her. Thankfully I had slowed a lot so damage wasn’t as major as it could be, but her car was dented in and my bumper was all messed up. I insisted on calling cops to report the accident and she screamed at me like a maniac because she had kids (in the car with her) and I was a 20-something with a nicer car than her so I should just let her go. Absolute entitlement (and I say this as a mom who drives a minivan now).

The police officer came and seemed annoyed at me for making him stand in the rain to write a report. Said police don’t get involved for under 1k in damages, but I said it was a fast enough crash I was sure it would be more than than (dear reader, it ended up being 4K+ in damage plus lost wages for me, I’m really glad I got a citation against her). Another fun fact, I looked her up in the local court system and she had a string of speeding/accident tickets a mile long. Yet the entire time I was treated like I was the bad guy causing everyone a headache on a rainy day (even though I’ve never even had a ticket in my life).

I share this story because it absolutely shocks me that police would get involved over a scratch in an airport parking lot in which insurance info. was left.

But she could have left. Why did she stay? Did her car not run?

Gotta leave a note, with all the cameras around and inevitable witnesses laughing and delighting in the misfortune.

Happened to me recently. I left a note with my contact info but didn’t hear anything back. The other car was already a bit beat up so I’m assuming they just didn’t really care. It still felt like the right thing to do (and I park in this same neighborhood regularly).

DS did this recently. We left a note and within the car’s owner called, thanked me for the nice note and said her car was already dinged up so not to worry about it. DS was so relieved. He is 16 and this was his first accident. We told him he’ll never get off so easily again.

Why would the police even come?? You left info. It is an insurance matter.

Because when he called me (a dozen times, the police said), my phone went straight to voicemail, and he thought I'd scammed him. I'd left my insurance company's phone number on the note, too, but he wanted to talk to me. I mean...it happened at JFK, my man. When I said I was leaving town, I wasn't skipping town.

BTW my daughter scrapped a park car and we got black mailed by the owner.

How can you be blackmailed? Insurance covers it. Unless you are trying to not report it..

This happened to my friend, before cellphone pictures.

Car owner blamed friend for all this other damage on the car.

I just drive away now.

Let insurance handle the dispute. It is nothing on you. There are cameras everywhere now.
