ANY sort of weapon. You mean like his hands, head, feet, teeth, stray sticks, bricks, pieces of pipe, broken glass, steak knives, pocket knives, kitchen knives, screwdrivers, pipe wrenches, flammables, chains, and pretty much any other object of daily use? All of which can be used as weapons, frequently to deadly effect.
Be logical. What was going on here? A floridly insane individual somehow or another got ahold of a gun. Given his mental condition and likely prior record it was probably unlawful for him to possess in the first place. It was unlawful for him to carry it without a permit. It was unlawful for him to have it on Metro but was unlawful for him to use it as he did.
Now, suppose for a moment that there was a way to remove floridly insane people from circulation until they are no longer floridly insane. No better way to prevent floridly insane people from accessing weapons of any kind.

Never heard of Charles Allen before today but he’s not a person to blame here. Blame lax gun laws (a uniquely American issue) and lack of mental health services.
I’d never heard of him either. I’m a lifelong dem and long term dc resident. I find his language in the clip troubling. Why does he refer to the murdered WMATA employee as “loss of life” as if it’s a passive thing, like a misplaced wallet? It would make more sense to put equal attention on the systemic mental health failure and the systemic security failure (and the person) who shot and injured people and shot and killed the wmata employee. Why is it not ok to say this?

But since it did happen in VA, unlike in DC, this guy is going away forever.
What are you talking about? It happened at the Potomac Avenue Metro stop at 14th and Pennsylvania Ave. SE. One stop from Eastern Market and two stops away from Capitol South which is where you get off to go to the US Capitol building.
I apologize. I was wrong. I thought this was near Potomac Ave in Alexandria.
In this case, it wouldn’t surprise me if this guy will be on the street tomorrow.
DC makes it both difficult to own a gun legally, AND gun crimes are regularly pled down to nothing. Does anyone else see a contradiction? We also do NOTHING in this city to address mental illness. So sorry for the family of the dead and injured.
DC needs to fix this. Any time someone in DC commits a crime with a gun, or even threatens to, not just shooting, but brandishing, threatening, or for that matter even just shoplifting with a gun tucked in your waistband, there should be an automatic mandatory minimum sentence. No plea - unless it leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever sold or gave them the gun and even then only a partial reduction of sentence.

Don't care about your crisis if you're using a gun in the middle of it. Get treatment while you're in jail.
